Got one in which had the pickguard removed several years ago. The glue has clumped in lumos I think it was removed with heat and a putty knife or similar. Owner wants it replaced. Any suggestions to remove the glue as the glue lumps seems totally impervious to methanol and naptha.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Just last week I had to clean old dried and dirty glue from both sides of a top. Two pickguards long gone, with the old glue having attracted all manners of stuff over the last 30 years. I used lots of naphta and finally this. Did it in a few passes, each time letting the stuff do its job for a bit longer so as not to disturb the underlying finish. It works great on water-based glues. I finally succeeded in getting the gunk out. Finished with naphta.
